Stock (Equities)
Shares of stock represent equity ownership in a corporation. When you buy stock, you become a part owner of the company. As a shareholder, you may benefit from an increase in the value of the corporation’s stock. When a company’s stock performs poorly, you may be adversely affected. Shareholders may be entitled to receive profits earned by the corporation through dividends, at the discretion of the company’s Board of Directors. Stock is bought and sold on stock exchanges, electronic markets and over-the-counter.
Stock Options
A stock option is a contract to buy or sell a specific stock which includes specific details including the strike price at which the contract may be exercised and an expiration date. An option expires worthless if it is not exercised prior to the expiration date.
Options consist of calls and puts, and can be either bought or sold. Each individual stock options investor maintains their own objectives and decides which options contracts will best fit their objective.
